Why I'm telling every young media professional in South Africa to master the full production process if they want a career that lasts

This is really for young media enthusiasts, especially those who want to be on radio or TV, or who genuinely enjoy public attention and being recognised. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. If you're good at it, own it. Wanting to be seen and heard is part of the job. I wanted that too. Maybe I still do, and maybe I'll lean into it more again one day.

After years in the media industry, some time on air and on TV, mostly in news and journalism, one piece of advice has shaped my entire approach. It was shared with me by a former executive producer very early on: make sure you understand the entire production process.

Not just what happens when the mic is live or the camera is on. I mean everything. From concept to strategy, pre-production, production, post-production, client service, and understanding your audience and what they actually want. Your audience keeps your ratings up, or your digital impressions in today's media world. And when you lead a show, a podcast, or even a segment, you're steering the ship, and that's an incredible position to be in.

That means knowing what a studio setup looks like, basic safety requirements, who the producer is versus the executive producer or line producer and what each role actually does. It means understanding camera operation at a basic level, mic feeds, sound output, troubleshooting, and how it all comes together in editing. When you can visualise the final product before you even start recording, you're already ahead.

You don't need to be an expert in all of this. That's why there are trained people for those roles. But once you understand the principles, including scriptwriting, it becomes so much easier to build a project and guide a team towards your vision. And honestly, it makes the work more enjoyable because you're collaborating, not just performing.

Now, let's be real. We live in South Africa, working in a competitive industry. There are three major broadcasters, growing opportunities in radio, and yes, plenty of talented people vying for the same spaces. But here's the thing: that competition pushes you to be better, sharper, more versatile.

The people who thrive aren't just presenters. They're the ones who understand production, process, time management, client delivery, and how to bring the right creatives and technical people together to make something work. Media isn't a one-trick pony industry, and the more skills you have, the more opportunities open up.

When production meetings happen, be present. It's your show, your voice, your face. That's what the public sees. But behind the scenes, there's an entire team making it possible, and understanding their world makes you a better collaborator and a more valuable team member.

Here's something important: the job market can be unpredictable, and sometimes that means facing offers that don't reflect your worth. But if you've built a versatile skill set, you're in a much stronger position. If presenting or radio shifts direction, you can still say with confidence: I can produce, I can direct, I can operate equipment, I can manage processes and teams. That's power.

I've seen talented people who shine on air but struggle when circumstances change because their skills were too narrow. I don't want that for you. I want you to build something sustainable, something that grows with you.

If you're already in this space, find a mentor. Look for someone who will push you, challenge you, and genuinely invest in your growth across all aspects of media. A good mentor won't just teach you how to sound better on air. They'll show you how the industry really works, how to navigate its ups and downs, and how to build a career that lasts beyond the spotlight. They'll see potential in you that you might not even see yet, and they'll help you develop it.

If you're fortunate enough to have someone like that in your corner, listen to them. Really listen. The advice might not always be what you want to hear, but it's usually what you need most. A mentor who cares will prepare you not just for success, but for longevity.

This industry has space for people who are willing to learn, who stay curious, and who understand that great media is a team effort. If you're prepared to grow beyond the microphone, to understand the craft behind the spotlight, and to let the right people guide you, you'll build something meaningful. And that's what really lasts.

The BMW X3 20 Pure Design

+++ The award-winning, Rosslyn-built BMW X3 range expanded with the new entry-level Pure Design derivative +++ Now-signature monolithic styling meets petrol technology and authentic BMW DNA +++ The Pure Design philosophy, introduced in the BMW 1 Series and 2 Series Gran Coupé, now extends to the BMW X3 line-up. +++

BMW Individual Manufaktur showcases bespoke craftsmanship through the Gary Player Signature BMW 7 Series.

+++ BMW highlights the art of customisation through its Individual Manufaktur service +++ The Gary Player Signature BMW 7 Series demonstrates the limitless personalisation possibilities +++ Crafted with unique finishes, materials and detailing to celebrate individuality and precision +++

Two South African motoring legends return as BMW launches exclusive Homage editions

+++ BMW Group South Africa pays tribute to the legendary 325iS “Gusheshe” and ultra-rare 333i with two exclusive Homage editions +++ Just 33 units of each model (66 in total) will be built +++

BMW Financial Services celebrates 35 years of offering premium mobility solutions in South Africa.

+++ BMW Financial Services celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2025 +++ More than three decades of offering tailor-made finance options for South Africans’ dream cars +++ Technological innovations and social responsibility projects reflect long-term commitment to industry excellence +++

The Absa Siyasizana Programme

Absa’s Siyasizana Programme is a financial relief initiative designed to support customers during times of financial hardship.
